Towards a European business model for podcasting

French-speaking Belgium shares its market with France. The FBPIP and the PIA (the French union of independent audio producers) are hosting a professional drinks evening, the day before a professional podcast day at Radio France.

On the programme: a round table on European funding and co-production between studios from different countries, followed by networking between Belgian and French producers, creators, broadcasters and institutions.

Why a federation

A sector ignored by platforms and institutions.

$2.86bn

in podcast advertising revenue in the United States in 2025, up 17.6% (IAB/PwC).
In Belgium, however, the sector remains fragile and marginal.

No pay and no visibility on the platforms

Platforms distribute independent podcasts without paying the people who make them. Belgian producers have no access to the promotional tools offered to their French or Dutch neighbours. The answer they get: “a market too small to be a priority”.

No public policy for podcasting

The word “podcast” does not appear once in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation's 2024-2029 Community Policy Statement. In Europe, it is missing from the AVMS Directive. Without a collective voice, the sector could neither be consulted nor negotiate.

“Belgium is the Bermuda Triangle of podcasting. We have an ecosystem, not an industry. Our mission is to turn it into a national, international and European industry.”

Caroline Prévinaire, founding member of the FBPIP

Our mission

Studying, protecting and developing the interests of independent production.

  1. Bring together producers of native podcasts.
  2. Defend our members' interests before public and private bodies, ministries and institutions, from regional to international level.
  3. Build ties with other organisations in radio, audiovisual and web, in Belgium and abroad, and represent our members there.
  4. Run working groups on the practical issues of the trade.
  5. Promote diversity, inclusion and quality in the Belgian podcast ecosystem, across the three language communities.

Based on Article 5 of the FBPIP statutes.

Our first priorities

In Belgium and beyond.

In Belgium
  • Negotiate with RTBF, the leading commissioner of podcasts in French-speaking Belgium, on contracts and collective agreements.
  • Open the Tax Shelter to podcasts.
  • Secure public funding suited to native podcasts.
International
  • Negotiate with platforms and European institutions through the International Podcast Alliance (IPA), of which the FBPIP is a founding member.
  • Carry Belgium's voice in Europe on “prominence” rules.
And also
  • Increase the visibility of Belgian creators.
  • Professionalise the sector.
  • Obtain reliable audience measurement tools for independent production.
  • Stand up for the ethical use of AI.In April 2026, on a single day, new podcasts likely generated by AI outnumbered those made by humans (Podcast Index).
